Will You Stand With Jesus – Luke 22:47-51

Will You Stand with Jesus When It Matters Most?

Standing for Jesus seems like an easy commitment to make in the comfort of church, surrounded by fellow believers. But what happens when you’re faced with real-world situations where your faith is challenged, mocked, or even threatened? The story of Peter’s three denials offers powerful lessons about what it truly means to stand with Christ when the pressure is on.

What Does It Really Mean to Stand for Jesus?

Standing for Jesus isn’t about holding protest signs or confronting strangers with bold proclamations. It’s about taking a stand for what you believe in the everyday situations and environments where God places you. Whether it’s at work gatherings, family dinners, or social events, you’ll find yourself around people who don’t share your faith. The question becomes: will you stand for Jesus when it’s uncomfortable?

Light always condemns darkness. When you take a stand for what is right and true, those living in darkness will often lash out. Jesus warned us this would happen – they will hate you because they hate Him first.

Why Do We Fail to Stand When We Should?

Peter’s failure to stand with Jesus didn’t begin in the courtyard where he denied knowing Christ. It started earlier in the Garden of Gethsemane when he was sleeping instead of praying. When we sleep instead of pray, we’re not prepared to stand when we’re supposed to.

The pattern is clear: if you’re not willing to stand with Jesus when you don’t understand His plans, you definitely won’t stand with Him when persecution comes your way.

Three Tests of Standing with Jesus

Standing When You Don’t Understand the Plan

When the soldiers came to arrest Jesus, Peter drew his sword and cut off the servant’s ear. He didn’t understand that Jesus was supposed to die. Peter thought he was protecting Jesus, but Jesus told him to put away his sword – this was part of God’s plan.

It’s easy to stand with God when everything is going your way. But can you stand with Him in the hospital room, the unemployment line, or when you have more bills than money? Can you stand with Him when things don’t seem to go according to your plans?

The key is learning to say: “I may not know the plan, but I trust the planner.”

Standing When the World Ridicules You

As Peter sat by the fire in the high priest’s courtyard, people began pointing fingers and mocking him. “Aren’t you one of those people who follow Jesus? Aren’t you one of those Christians?” They weren’t threatening to arrest him – they were ridiculing him for his association with Christ.

This sounds familiar today: “Oh, you’re one of those people who go to church. You’re one of those people who believe the Bible.” The mocking continues, but the question remains – will you stand with Jesus even when they ridicule you?

Standing When Facing Real Persecution

The final test came when someone recognized Peter as the one who had cut off Malchus’s ear. Suddenly, Peter faced real danger – by law, he could be put to death for his actions against the high priest’s servant. When persecution became a real possibility, Peter denied Christ completely.

One day, standing for Christ in our country might mean facing real persecution. The question is: will you stand with Jesus even then?

How Peter’s Failure Became Victory

Peter’s story doesn’t end with failure. The same man who denied Jesus three times became the bold preacher at Pentecost where thousands were saved. He led the early church through persecution and eventually died as a martyr for Christ.

Failure is not final unless you choose for it to be. Peter chose to keep moving forward, and God used his failure to create an even stronger foundation for his future ministry.

The Secret to Standing Strong

Daniel provides the key to standing strong in difficult circumstances. Daniel 1:8 says he “purposed in his heart” that he would not defile himself. This means he made his decision before the pressure came.

Daniel didn’t wait until he was facing the lion’s den to decide he would stand for God. He chose to stand before anyone put pressure on him, before anyone said anything about God. He decided in advance: no matter what happens, I will stand.

Life Application

This week, purpose in your heart to stand with Jesus regardless of the circumstances. Don’t wait until you’re in a difficult situation to decide what you’ll do. Make the commitment now: whether people mock you, threaten you, or make you uncomfortable, you will stand for Christ because He has been faithful to you.

Consider these questions as you prepare for situations where your faith might be challenged:

  • Have you made a firm decision in advance to stand for Jesus no matter what?
  • Are you spending time in prayer to prepare for the tests that will come?
  • When faced with ridicule or pressure, will you choose to honor Christ over your own comfort?
  • How can you use any past failures as motivation to stand stronger in the future?

Remember, it’s easy to stand for Jesus in church, but the real test comes when you’re out in the world. The people around you need to see Christians who are willing to take a stand for what they believe, share the gospel boldly, and live according to God’s truth regardless of the cost.
